Sorcha arrived earlier than Riderch had anticipated. He was once again on the training field, drenched in sweat as he coached Ian through a new skill. They stood facing each other, weapons raised as Riderch called out his corrections for Ian’s grip. He had been so focused on his task that he had dismissed the rustling of cotton that came from over Ian’s shoulder. He didn’t notice her standing there until Malcolm shifted, unblocking her from his view.

She was watching him in rapt fascination as he lunged for Ian. This realization made his focus shift from training the young man to taking her in. Today she wore a lavender dress that flowed out from her hips and down to her ankles with a cream-colored corset peeking out from under the matching purple cloak she had tied around her shoulders. The wind whipped her braid back and forth, freeing some of the auburn curls , sending the strands to dance on the breeze. Her pale skin was radiant in the sunlight, the dusting of freckles across her face highlighting the small tip of her nose and high cheekbones.

Ian, completely undistracted by the woman behind him, took advantage of Riderch’s half-hearted advance and executed the move he had just been taught perfectly. Riderch had been so caught up in watching the way the wind caressed Sorcha’s face that he didn’t realize what was happening until he was knocked to the ground, his sword flying several feet away from his empty hand. He landed with a grunt and Ian let out a whoop of excitement.

“Did ye see that Malcolm?” the young man called out, drawing the attention of everyone nearby.

“Aye,” the large man told him, chuckling, “ye knocked the laird flat on his arse.”

Riderch picked himself up, dusting off his fall and trying not to let his pride get the better of him.

“Well done, lad,” Connor complimented and slapped Ian on the back before saying, “ye took advantage of the situation and did what he told ye to do. Now if ye can do that when facing yer enemy, ye will have nay troubles on the battlefield.”

“Aye, tis true,” Malcolm chimed in then added with a mirthful grin, “but I doubt ye will find a beautiful woman on the battlefield to distract yer opponent the way this one did Riderch.”

At that, Ian spun and saw Sorcha behind him, her eyes still locked on Riderch. It was hard to miss the way her cheeks bloomed with color as the crowd that had gathered began to make sense of Malcolm’s assessment. If he was honest, Riderch would have to admit that he didn’t mind the way Sorcha reacted to him, nor did he mind his men knowing of his interest in the woman. He could tell himself that if his men suspected he was courting Sorcha, it would help lessen suspicions but he found he didn’t care enough to try to believe that lie.

“A victory is a victory,” Riderch announced looking at Niall, “donnae let anyone try to taint what ye have won.
